The whole path, start to finish — requirements, your permit, ELDT training, the skills test, and endorsements. Written by DFW's highest-rated CDL school, where you can test on-site and most students finish in about 3–4 weeks.
Questions? Real People Answer 817-864-8086Getting your commercial driver's license in Texas isn't complicated — but the order matters, and the federal ELDT rules trip a lot of people up. Here's the exact path, plus where ACE makes it faster than everywhere else (you test right on our campus — no DMV trip). The whole thing usually takes about 3 to 4 weeks.
Before anything else, make sure you qualify. In Texas you must be at least 18 to drive commercially within the state, or 21 to drive across state lines or haul hazardous materials. You'll need a valid Texas driver's license, a DOT physical (medical examiner's certificate), and proof of identity. Federal law also requires every commercial driver to meet an English-language proficiency standard — you must be able to read road signs, talk with officials, and complete reports in English. We train you to that standard so you're ready for real DOT roadside checks.
Since February 2022, federal Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rules require you to complete approved theory instruction before you can get your Commercial Learner's Permit. You study the material, then pass the written knowledge tests at Texas DPS to receive your CLP. The CLP is what lets you legally get behind the wheel of a commercial truck to train. ACE walks you through the theory and the permit prep so you're not figuring it out alone.
With your CLP in hand, you complete the behind-the-wheel half of ELDT at a school listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry — like ACE. This is where the real learning happens: range work (backing, alley docking, coupling) and on-road driving in an actual tractor-trailer. We train on manual and automatic, day cab and sleeper, short and long box on concrete pads, so you graduate ready for any carrier's equipment — not just ready to pass a test.
The CDL skills test has three parts: the pre-trip inspection, basic control skills, and the on-road driving test. Here's ACE's biggest edge: we're a Licensed Third-Party Testing facility, so you test right on our campus with our examiners — no separate DPS appointment, no waiting weeks for a slot, no driving an unfamiliar truck. Our students pass the first time 97% of the time.
Once you have your CDL, endorsements open up higher-paying work. Add Hazmat (H) for tanker and chemical loads (requires a TSA background check), Tanker (N), Doubles/Triples (T), or Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) if you want to drive people. Each takes its own knowledge test. Ask us which endorsements pay off most for the routes you want — school bus training is coming soon →.
Tell us where you're at — brand new, got your permit, or somewhere in between — and we'll map out your fastest path to a CDL.
