The Steps That Take Time

  1. DOT physical. Usually one appointment. Book it the week you enroll.
  2. Permit course and knowledge tests. Classroom instruction, then three written tests for Class A. ACE administers the permit test on campus.
  3. The 14-day hold. Federal rule: at least 14 days between permit issuance and the skills test. Training continues during this window.
  4. Behind-the-wheel training. Daily backing practice, road training, and mock pre-trips. This is the bulk of the program.
  5. The skills test. Pre-trip, backing, and road test. At ACE this happens in our yard on our schedule.

Why Timelines Vary So Much

Community college programs often run on a semester calendar, so you may wait months for the next start and then train for a full term. Large chain schools frequently have big classes, which means less seat time per student per day and more calendar time to log the same practice. And almost every school that does not test on site has to work around DPS or third-party examiner availability, which can add days or weeks at the very end.

None of that is about how fast you can learn. It is about scheduling.

How ACE Keeps It Short

The result is that most day students finish in about three to four weeks, permit to license.

What Can Slow You Down

A few things are in your control. Arriving without a DOT medical card delays the permit. Skipping study time stretches the permit phase. Missing training days stretches everything. Choosing the evening schedule means more calendar weeks by design, in exchange for keeping your job.

If you want the fastest possible path, get your DOT physical before your first day, show up with your documents ready, and study the permit material the night you get it.

After the Test

Once you pass, DPS issues the CDL itself. Then comes the job. Recruiters from local and over-the-road carriers come to the ACE campus to meet students before graduation, and our job placement support includes resume and interview prep, so most students are talking to employers before they have their license in hand.

Timeline Questions.

How long is CDL school at ACE?

Most day students finish in about three to four weeks. Evening students take longer because they train fewer hours per week. Call 817-864-8086 for the timeline on the next start date.

Why do some CDL schools take months?

Semester calendars, large class sizes that limit daily seat time, and waiting for an outside skills test appointment. ACE uses rolling starts and tests on campus.

Can I get my CDL in two weeks?

Federal law requires you to hold your commercial learner's permit for at least 14 days before the skills test, so two weeks is the absolute floor and is only realistic for a student who arrives with a permit already in hand.

Does the timeline include the skills test?

Yes. Because ACE is a Licensed Third-Party Tester, the skills test happens on campus as soon as you are ready, so there is no waiting period tacked on at the end.
