Test Day,
Without the Mystery.

The CDL skills test has three parts and no secrets. Every one of them is something you will have practiced dozens of times before an examiner ever watches you do it. Here is exactly what happens.

Part One: Vehicle Inspection

The test opens with the pre-trip inspection. You walk the tractor and trailer and tell the examiner, out loud, what you are checking and what you are looking for: engine compartment, fluids, belts, hoses, steering, suspension, brakes, tires, lights, coupling, trailer, and the in-cab checks including the air brake tests. You are being scored on whether you know what a defect looks like and whether you would catch one.

This is the part students fear most because it is a lot of talking. It is also the most learnable. At ACE you run mock pre-trips every day of the program until the routine is automatic. By test day most students could do it in their sleep, which is the point.

Part Two: Basic Control Skills

Next you demonstrate control of the vehicle at low speed in a marked course. Texas examiners select from the standard maneuvers: straight-line backing, offset backing to the left or right, parallel parking, and alley dock. You are scored on encroachments over the boundary lines, the number of pull-ups you use to correct, and whether you get out to look more times than allowed.

Our yard is set up for exactly these maneuvers, and you practice them daily. By the time you test, the cones are old friends.

Part Three: The Road Test

Finally you drive on public roads with the examiner in the cab. You will be asked to make left and right turns, drive through intersections, merge, change lanes, handle a railroad crossing if one is on the route, manage speed on hills or curves, and pull over and start again on the shoulder. The examiner scores your mirror use, signaling, lane position, speed control, following distance, and shifting if you are in a manual.

Because ACE students train on the roads around Mansfield, the road test route is familiar territory rather than a new city.

Restrictions You Can Accidentally Earn

ACE tests you in a real fifth-wheel tractor-trailer with air brakes, so the only choice you make is manual or automatic.

Why Testing at ACE Changes the Odds

Most schools train you, then send you to a DPS office or a separate test site to be examined by a stranger in a truck you may never have driven. ACE is a Licensed Third-Party Tester for both the permit and the license. You test in the same yard you trained in, in the same trucks, with examiners you already know. Nothing about test day is new except the score sheet.

That is a big part of why our first-time pass rate is 97 percent. It is also why students finish faster: no waiting on an outside appointment. Read more about CDL testing on the ACE campus in Mansfield.

If You Do Not Pass a Part

It happens, and it is not the end. You keep credit for the parts you passed and retest only the part you missed. Our instructors review exactly what the examiner marked, you drill it, and you go again. Talk to us about retest timing and any fees before test day so there are no surprises.

Questions, Answered

Skills Test Questions.

What are the three parts of the CDL skills test?

Vehicle inspection (the pre-trip), basic control skills (backing maneuvers in a marked course), and the on-road driving test. You must pass each part in order.

Where do ACE students take the CDL skills test?

On the ACE campus at 950 Trinity Drive in Mansfield. ACE is a Licensed Third-Party Tester for both the CDL permit and the CDL license, so students test in the same yard and trucks they trained in.

What happens if I test in an automatic truck?

Your CDL will carry an E restriction that prohibits driving a manual transmission commercial vehicle. ACE trains and tests in both manual and automatic trucks so you can choose.

What is ACE's first-time pass rate?

97 percent.

If I fail one part of the skills test, do I retake the whole thing?

No. You keep credit for the parts you passed and retest only the part you missed.
