The Two Age Lines
18: intrastate. Texas issues CDLs at 18. With one you can drive a commercial vehicle anywhere inside Texas, which in a state this size is a lot of freight. Dallas to Houston, Fort Worth to El Paso, the Valley to Amarillo. All of it is legal at 18.
21: interstate. Federal rules (49 CFR 391.11) set 21 as the minimum age to drive a commercial vehicle across state lines, to haul hazardous materials that require placards, and to carry passengers interstate. Cross into Oklahoma or Louisiana with a load at 20 and you are in violation, no matter what your Texas CDL says.
What You Can Do From 18 to 20
This is where a lot of young drivers get bad advice. The 18 to 20 window is not dead time. Texas has an enormous intrastate freight market: local delivery, regional runs that stay inside the state, construction and materials hauling, port and rail yard work, and dedicated accounts for Texas-based shippers. Many carriers hire 18 to 20 year olds specifically for these lanes.
Using those years to build a clean record and real experience means that on your 21st birthday you are not a rookie. You are a driver with two or three years of verifiable experience applying for the jobs everyone else is applying to.
What Changes at 21
- Over-the-road and interstate regional jobs open up, which is the majority of the industry.
- You can add the Hazmat endorsement, which requires the TSA background check and the age minimum together.
- Interstate passenger work becomes available.
- Most carrier pay scales and dedicated accounts assume interstate eligibility, so your options widen sharply.
Is There an Upper Age Limit?
No. There is no maximum age for a CDL. What matters is passing the DOT physical and keeping your medical certification current. We train students in their fifties and sixties who are starting a second career, and carriers hire them. Read what the DOT physical checks if that is your concern.
Getting Started at Any Age
The training is the same at 18 or 58. You need a valid Texas driver license, a DOT medical card, and the willingness to show up every day. ACE's Class A program has most day students finishing in about three to four weeks with testing on our Mansfield campus, and our job placement team knows which carriers hire at 18 and which need you to be 21. Call 817-864-8086 and tell us your age and your goal. We will map it out.
